Portugal is part of the EU single market — customs declaration and import duties do not apply. You need a commercial invoice, delivery note and CMR consignment note, plus the recipient's Portuguese VAT number for the zero-rated supply. Madeira and the Azores are subject to differing tax rules that should be clarified in advance.

Route and transit time

Portugal is one of the most distant destinations in European road freight: Lisbon and Porto are reached in five to seven business days. The route runs through the whole of France and Spain, so delays en route can accumulate. For time-critical consignments a direct run is the more reliable option than groupage transport.

Typical consignments and coverage

Typical goods are machinery, textile machinery, construction supplies and retail products. The Lisbon and Porto conurbations and the industrial belt between them are best served; the Alentejo and the Algarve add a day. Because of the long distance, packaging matters particularly here: a consignment passes through several transhipment points, and each one is an added risk if the loading unit is not stable. Because of the distance, consolidating shipments is particularly worthwhile on this lane: a single pallet and four pallets differ far less in price than the number suggests, since the run itself dominates the cost. Where you deliver to Portugal regularly, a fixed weekly departure is usually cheaper and more predictable than booking each consignment individually.
