Freight Forwarding to Bulgaria – Prices, Transit Times & Transport Options

Shipping to Bulgaria: customs, route, transit time

Customs and documents

Bulgaria belongs to the EU single market — customs declaration and import duties do not apply. A commercial invoice, delivery note and CMR are sufficient, plus the recipient's Bulgarian VAT number for the zero-rated intra-Community supply.

Route and transit time

Bulgaria is one of the most distant destinations in EU road freight: Sofia is reached in four to six business days, Varna and the Black Sea coast in five to seven. The route runs via Austria, Hungary and Romania, or via Serbia — the Serbian route adds transit formalities through a third country.

Typical consignments and coverage

Typical goods are machinery parts, electronic components, textiles and retail products. Sofia, Plovdiv and Varna are the main economic centres and best connected; rural regions add a day. Because of the long route across several countries, bundling into larger consignments pays off, and packaging should be designed for repeated transhipment. For time-critical deliveries, weigh a direct run against groupage early: on a lane of this length, delays accumulate across several handling points, and the surcharge for a dedicated vehicle is often smaller than the cost of an assembly or production line waiting. Where a fixed delivery date matters — a plant commissioning, a trade fair, a construction milestone — a scheduled delivery with a binding time window is the more reliable choice than standard shipping.
