What does a trip sheet contain?
A trip sheet contains: every consignment on the round (with consignment number, consignee, weight and number of packages), the vehicle number and driver details, the departure and destination depot, and time stamps and handover confirmations. In modern network operations trip sheets are kept digitally in the TMS – the driver confirms takeover and handover by scan or app.
Trip sheet vs consignment note
The consignment note (CMR) is the legal contract document for a single consignment between consignor and carrier. The trip sheet is an internal operating document of the forwarder that bundles all the consignments on one round. Trip sheets matter less for claims than the consignment note, but they are important for internal handover documentation.
The digital trip sheet in the TMS
Modern transport management systems (TMS) replace the paper trip sheet with digital round lists. The planner builds the round on screen and the driver receives it on a mobile device. Status updates (collected, delivered, failed delivery) are fed back into the TMS in real time and are visible to customers in tracking.
