How the lorry toll is calculated
The toll is calculated as distance (km) x toll rate (euros/km). The toll rate is made up of infrastructure costs, air pollution costs, noise costs and, since 2023, CO2 emission costs. For a Euro VI articulated lorry (a 2-axle tractor unit plus a 3-axle trailer = 5 axles) the toll rate is approximately 0.30–0.45 euros per km. Older vehicles in poorer emission classes pay more.
The CO2 element since December 2023
Since 1 December 2023 the toll has included a CO2 component: approximately 0.20 euros per km for Euro VI vehicles. This addition has increased toll costs for forwarders by 80–100 %. The extra cost is normally passed straight into freight rates – either in the base tariff or as a separate toll surcharge.
Liability for the toll and exemptions
Vehicles from 7.5 t gross weight are liable for the toll on federal motorways and federal roads. Exemptions: scheduled buses, armed forces vehicles, fire service and other emergency vehicles. Electric lorries are exempt from the CO2 component until 2026, but still pay the infrastructure and noise elements.
