What matters when arranging IBC container shipping
An IBC container brings its own pallet, which simplifies handling but makes a forklift or pallet truck a precondition at both ends. A filled 1,000-litre IBC weighs 1,000 to 1,300 kg depending on contents and can neither be moved by hand nor unloaded by liftgate alone. Clarify the unloading situation before booking.
For filled containers the contents determine the rules. Water-soluble, non-hazardous substances travel as a standard consignment; anything with a UN number falls under ADR and must be declared as dangerous goods. Also check the test date on the data plate: expired IBCs may no longer be used for dangerous goods. Empty, uncleaned containers still count as hazardous.
Fill weight, contents and the unloading situation are the decisive details at booking. A full IBC is always a single-pallet consignment requiring a forklift at both ends. Empty, cleaned containers, by contrast, can be stacked and shipped considerably more cheaply. For hazardous contents the UN number belongs in the booking, otherwise the consignment cannot be classified correctly and cannot be carried.
