What matters when arranging gearbox shipping
Gearboxes are consignments where weight dictates the entire transport plan. A manual gearbox weighs 20 to 80 kg, an automatic 60 to 150 kg. Above roughly 200 kg the driver is not obliged to lift without a loading aid — book a liftgate if the recipient has neither ramp nor forklift.
The second point is oil. Gearboxes are never shipped completely drained; residual oil escapes through open connections and soils neighbouring consignments. Close every connection with blanking plugs and stand the gearbox on an oil-absorbent mat on the pallet. Strap it by the housing, never by attachments such as the shift linkage or clutch slave cylinder.
For booking we need the weight, the pallet dimensions and whether a ramp or forklift is available at the recipient. If neither is, a liftgate must be part of the booking. Gearboxes almost always travel as a single pallet. For time-critical workshop deliveries, express shipping or a direct run is worthwhile — a vehicle standing idle in the workshop costs more than the freight surcharge.
