What matters when arranging e-bike shipping
With an e-bike the battery is the decisive detail. Lithium-ion batteries above 100 Wh fall under ADR dangerous goods rules — they cannot simply travel fitted in the frame. Remove the battery and declare it as a separate dangerous goods consignment. Shipped undeclared, the consignment can be stopped during handling.
The bike itself is treated like a high-value bicycle: turn the handlebars 90 degrees, remove the pedals, secure the cranks. At 22 to 30 kg an e-bike weighs considerably more than an unpowered bicycle, so the carton must be correspondingly sturdy. A mid-motor lowers the centre of gravity, which is why the frame also needs wedging against tipping inside the box.
Declare the bike and the battery separately at booking. The bike runs as an oversized or pallet consignment, the battery as a class 9 dangerous goods consignment with its own packaging and labelling. For dealers shipping regularly, a collective declaration is possible. Without the watt-hour figure the battery cannot be classified — the number is on the data plate and belongs in every booking.
