What matters when arranging battery shipping
Batteries are dangerous goods, and the class depends on the type. Lead-acid batteries fall under UN 2794 (class 8, corrosive), lithium-ion batteries under UN 3480 or UN 3481 (class 9). Both require correct declaration, approved packaging and labelling. An undeclared battery consignment is stopped during handling — with return transport and disposal charged to you.
In practice: insulate the terminals individually so no short circuit can form, secure the battery upright in rigid, non-conductive packaging and affix hazard labels on the outside. Lead-acid batteries also need an acid-absorbent liner in the carton. Damaged or leaking batteries may not be carried in groupage transport — a direct run with an ADR-qualified driver is the right route here.
For booking we need the UN number, weight, quantity and packaging type. Without these a dangerous goods consignment cannot be declared. Industrial batteries run as a pallet consignment with ADR labelling, individual batteries as groupage units. For specialist dealers shipping regularly, a recurring dangerous goods declaration is possible, which shortens the booking process considerably.
