What matters when arranging battery pack shipping
For lithium-ion battery packs the watt-hour rating determines the entire shipping route. Below 100 Wh, relaxed provisions apply; above it the full ADR rules under UN 3480 (pack alone) or UN 3481 (pack in equipment) take effect. The watt-hour figure is on the data plate — without it the consignment cannot be classified correctly and therefore cannot be carried.
State of charge is the second mandatory detail: a maximum of 30 percent is prescribed for transport, because a fully charged pack releases considerably more energy in a fault. Tape the contacts individually, place the pack in rigid, non-conductive packaging with ample padding and affix class 9 hazard labels on the outside. Damaged or swollen packs are excluded from groupage transport.
The booking needs the watt-hour rating, the UN number (3480 or 3481), the state of charge and the packaging type. If one of these is missing, the consignment cannot be classified. Small battery packs run as groupage units, storage systems as pallet consignments with dangerous goods labelling. For dealers shipping packs regularly, a framework declaration pays off, because classification then need not be reassessed for every consignment.
