Pallet dimensions: Euro vs industrial pallet
At 120 cm x 80 cm x 14.4 cm high, the Euro pallet (EUR pallet, EPAL) is the standard format in Europe. It is designed for a load capacity of up to 1,500 kg (dynamic) and 4,000 kg (static) and occupies 0.4 loading metres. The industrial pallet measures 120 cm x 100 cm and occupies 0.5 LDM. It is stronger (up to 2,000 kg dynamic) and suits heavy machinery and goods.
EPAL pallet exchange: how it works
EPAL (European Pallet Association) is the certification system for Euro pallets. EPAL pallets carry a branded mark with the EPAL logo. Under the exchange system the consignee returns exactly as many empty pallets on each delivery as they receive full ones. If they cannot hand over any pallets, the driver issues a pallet note.
Stackability and load securing
Whether pallets can be stacked depends on the type of goods, the stability of the packaging and the weight. Stackable goods double the loading capacity and reduce freight costs. Stretch film, edge protectors and strapping are required for load securing.
Pricing and delivery times
Pallet prices depend on LDM, weight and route. A single Euro pallet within Germany costs between 60 and 120 euros in groupage traffic, depending on the forwarder, the weight and capacity utilisation. Delivery times: standard domestic pallets 1–2 business days, EU 2–5 business days.
