Tips for the safe packaging of your shipments

Safe and proper packaging is crucial for the successful transport of your shipment. With the right packaging materials and techniques you protect your goods from damage during transport.

Follow our packaging tips to ensure that your shipment arrives undamaged at the recipient.

Basic packaging rules

Choosing the right box

  • Use sturdy, new or near-new cardboard boxes
  • The box should match the weight of the goods
  • At least double-walled corrugated cardboard for heavy goods
  • No damaged or previously used boxes

Padding material

  • Bubble wrap for sensitive items
  • Filling material (polystyrene, paper) for cavities
  • At least 5 cm clearance to all box surfaces
  • Goods must not be able to move inside the box

Step-by-step packaging guide

1

Reinforce box base

Tape the box base crosswise with strong parcel tape. For heavy shipments additionally tape lengthwise and widthwise.

2

Line the base

Line the box base with padding material. At least 5 cm of padding provides optimal protection against impacts.

3

Pack goods

Wrap sensitive items individually in bubble wrap. Place heavy items at the bottom, light items on top.

4

Fill cavities

Fill all cavities and gaps with filling material. The goods must not move inside the closed box.

5

Seal box

Seal the box with strong parcel tape. Apply along the full length and reinforce the middle with an additional strip.

6

Attach labelling

Attach the shipping label prominently. Remove old labels. For fragile goods additionally mark "Handle with care" or "Fragile".

Frequently asked questions about packaging

Which packaging is suitable for freight forwarder shipping?
For freight forwarder transport we recommend sturdy boxes or wooden crates, not carrier bags. Use sufficient filling material such as bubble wrap or packing chips. The box must be able to support the weight of the contents and should not be loadable to more than 70% of its own weight.
Do I need to package the shipment myself?
Transport-appropriate packaging is a prerequisite for shipping and is your responsibility. For particularly sensitive or valuable goods we offer professional packaging services on request.
How do I package fragile goods correctly?
Fragile goods should be wrapped individually in bubble wrap and padded with at least 5 cm of filling material on all sides. Label the shipment with "Fragile". Items must never rattle loosely inside the box.
What happens if the packaging is insufficient?
Insufficient packaging can cause transport damage for which no insurance benefit is provided. The driver may refuse a collection if the packaging is obviously insufficient. When in doubt, always over-package rather than under-package.
Are there special regulations for shipping lithium batteries?
Yes, lithium-ion batteries (e.g. in e-bikes) are classified as hazardous goods (ADR) and must be secured and declared accordingly. Where possible, batteries should be removed and packaged separately. Contact us for individual advice on hazardous goods transport.
